Workshop highlights media’s role in climate change reporting
The monthly consultative workshop on ‘Climate Change Reporting’ was held under the aegis of Media Resource Centre, Manipur, and state directorate of Environment & Climate Change, at the conference hall of the directorate of Environment & Climate Change, on Sunday.
Environmental journalist from Assam, Mubina Akhtar, was the resource person of the workshop, which was attended by Dr. Y Nabachandra, director of Environment & Climate Change and joint director, Dr. T Brajakumar Singh, editors and senior journalists of the state besides members of the Media Resource Centre.
In her presentation, Akhtar highlighted the media’s role as well as how a journalist can write front page climate change report and visuals to attract the readers or viewers.
Recipients of the 3rd media fellowship programme of the Directorate of Environment and Climate Change and journalists who understand the issues of climate change reporting and personalities from film, courtyard play and music, also attended the day-long session
Challenges and hardships faced by fellowship candidates whilst publishing news, as well as the need for increasing awareness on climate change, were also discussed during the workshop.
In his speech, Dr. Nabachandra, lauded the efforts played by the journalists in disseminating the climate change-related stories to the common people with the objective of reaching the unreached.
Editor and author Pradip Phanjoubam, senior journalists Salam Rajesh, Khogendra Khomdram and Sobhapati Samom, along with scientists of the department, also attended the consultative meet.
The experts and fellows shared their point of views on climate change issues and media’s role in educating the general public for mitigation and adaptation initiatives in the region.
It may be mentioned that ten journalists of Manipur were awarded the 3rd state-level media fellowship programme on Climate Change Reporting for the year 2022-23. In the first edition of the media fellowship programme, six journalists were selected in the year 2018-19.
