Imphal, December 14

A women organisation in the remote village of Oinam Sawombung in Manipur’s Thoubal district on Monday expressed unhappiness against the Manipur Police for allegedly branding a villager as an ISI activist.
Imphal West Police commandos claimed to have arrested one Saifula Islam on the charge of being an operative of the Pakistan’s ISI (Inter-Services Intelligence) from Oinam Swombung area during operation and the report on the arrest was widely carried in local newspapers on December 13.
The police had identified the alleged ISI operative as Saifula Islam, hailing from Oinam Swombung, a Muslim village. Wangoi Police Station also claimed that incriminating documents were also seized from his possession.
Meira Paibi Development Association, Oinam Swombung general secretary Ym Latiful in a press note said the accusation by police against Saifula is ‘unfortunate’ and alleged that the report was an attempt to tarnish the image of the Muslim village.
The women body further expressed suspicion that it was a conspiracy to blot the village by the police as they failed to produce the incriminating documents reportedly seized from Saifula before the media. It said that the Wangoi Police needs proper identification of the local man suspected of being an ISI member.
The press note said the women body would never allow bad people to live in the village and added that the Muslim community in Manipur have been strongly condemning terrorism carried out in the name of Islam.
