Wokha district gets Khelo India Centre

Wokha: Khelo India Centre was inaugurated at Indoor Badminton Stadium, Wokha, on Monday with YM Humtsoe, MLA, as the special guest.

Humtsoe in his address thanked the Government of India and the state government for giving opportunity to the people of Wokha district in the field of sports under the aegis of Khelo India.

The opening of Khelo India Centre will encourage youngsters of the district to participate in games and sports, which will enable them to participate not only in the district or state levels but also in the national and international arenas.

The MLA said Wokha district has immense talent at the grass root level but due to lack of opportunities and facilities, it could produce only negligible number of sportspersons.

However, with the introduction of Khelo India scheme, he expressed optimism that the district will produce a good number of sportspersons.

He also reminded all the stakeholders that the district has a responsibility to encourage the youngsters to take up sports as a profession to produce more sports person to represent the state and the country in the international arena.

Humtsoe further assured the youngsters of the district that the local representatives of the district will come forward and provide support to individuals who take up games and sports seriously.

Deputy Commissioner, Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan, said the day was momentous for the district as it is the first Khelo India Centre (Badminton) in the district.

The DC said the centre will provide necessary equipment, coaching facilities and other kinds of support to the sports persons, particularly to the young and upcoming sports persons.

Ranjan reminded that games and sports are not just about winning medals but they also build character and personality, which inspire a person to inculcate the values of dedication, perseverance and hard work.

On the occasion, the district also awarded certificates to two young achievers W Kikon (Archery) and Erenbeni P Lotha (Badminton) under Beti Bachao Beti Pahdao.

District Youth Resources Officer, K Libemo Jami, said the district has seen the light of day with the inaugural of Khelo India Centre in the discipline of badminton. Jami informed that the district will have a selection trial to select trainees to be enrolled in the National Sports Repository System (NSRS) so that they can participate in various structured tournaments.
