DIMAPUR— Joining several organisations in the state in opposing the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC), the Konyak Union (KU) has said that it will not allow the implementation of the law under any circumstances.

In a press release, the KU stated that the introduction of UCC could have an “adverse and negative impact on our existing peaceful society”, and that the law is unnecessary for the community.

“The Konyak land, although predominantly inhabited by Christians, holds the values of inclusivity and respects all faiths and communities. Our community strongly believes in upholding the principles of customary practices and the existing laws of the land protected by Art. 371 (A) of the Indian Constitution, which have served us well throughout generations,” it stated.

It also expressed apprehension over the possibility of diluting its rich culture and traditions.

“The implementation of the Uniform Civil Code has the potential to disrupt the delicate fabric of our society. It may lead to the erosion of the unique cultural practices, customs, and traditions that have shaped the identity of the Konyak community. The UCC, by attempting to standardize personal laws across different religious communities, risks undermining the diversity and richness of our land,” read the press release.

“The Konyak Union reiterates its commitment to maintaining peace and harmony within our jurisdiction. We firmly oppose any attempts to impose the Uniform Civil Code and will not allow its implementation under any circumstances,” it said, adding that the existing customary practices and laws continue to “ensure justice and fairness for all members of our community”.

“We call upon the authorities and policymakers to respect the autonomy and unique identity of the Konyak community and the Nagas at large,” it said while appealing for an “inclusive approach to governance that considers the specific needs and aspirations of our community, allowing us to preserve our rich heritage and customs”.

Meanwhile, the KU said that it is “open to dialogue and constructive engagement with all stakeholders to address any concerns and find mutually agreeable solutions that uphold the principles of justice, equality, and respect for diversity”.
