VK Area organisations warn against extortion, illegal taxation on NH 2

DIMAPUR — To curb the growing problem of extortion and illegal taxation on National Highway 2 (NH 2), a group of civil society organisations in the VK area of Zunheboto district, has adopted a resolution prohibiting all such activities within their jurisdiction.

The VK Area GB’s Association, VK Range Students’ Union, VK Area Peoples Organisation, and public leaders convened an emergency general meeting on October 14 at VK HQ town hall to address the issue. The meeting culminated in a unanimous decision to strictly prohibit all forms of extortion and illegal taxation by various “underground factions” on the 20 km stretch of NH-2 from Doyang to Izheto village.

In a public notice issued on Friday, the organisations stated that “noncompliance with this resolution will result in harsh penalties, and individuals or groups/organisation found guilty will face severe penalties and consequences.” It appealed to all the underground factions to refrain from engaging in extortion and illegal taxation at NH-2.

“Failure to comply with, we will be forced to withdraw our cooperation and take collective action,” it asserted, adding that the organisations would join hands with the administration and police department in keeping the area free from anti-social elements.

Further, the organisations emphasised their commitment to safeguarding the well-being of travellers, stating that ensuring their safety and security has always been a top priority.

It also provided helpline numbers for travellers to contact in case of any incidents, mishaps, threats, or unwanted interactions with anti-social individuals or groups.
