Veterinary department conducts training on meat production

DIMAPUR — The department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences conducted a four-day capacity-building training on meat production in Mon, Phek and Mokokchung districts under state plan 2023-24.

In Mon, the training was conducted from June 5 to the 8th at the office of the chief veterinary officer (CVO) in Mon town.

Veterinary surgeon, Dr. Lhuveta Nyekha, presented a brief introduction and keynote address on “Hygienic meat production and consumption,” while the resource persons including Dr. Manjan Konyak, Dr. Sikhambo, Dr. Y Yawing Konyak and Dr. Pangdun Konyak spoke on the scope of piggery and poultry rearing, site selection and housing management for pigs, selection of breed in pigs, feeding management in pigs, care and management of gilt and sow during pregnancy and farrowing, care and management of newborn piglets, diseases and health care in pigs, housing and floor space management in poultry, advantages of commercial chicks over local chickens, feeding management in poultry, management of layers, common diseases of poultry and vaccination schedule and healthcare in poultry.

Altogether, 50 progressive farmers from the district attended the training.

In another programme, the office of CVO in Phek successfully completed a four-day capacity-building training on meat production at its office from June 4 to the 7th.

Dr. Esther Krocha, CVO in-charge of Phek, highlighted the scope of meat production in Phek district, while the resource persons namely Dr. Rosou Pohena, VAS Pfutsero, and Dr. Nusa, VAS Phek, spoke on poultry and piggery production during the training.

The capacity-building programme concluded with a field visit to the state pig breeding centre in Chosaba. Certificates were given to all the 50 participants from villages of all the blocks under Phek district.

A four-day capacity-building on meat production in Mokokchung was also conducted from June 3 to the 6th at El-Dora conference hall in Mokokchung town.

The introduction and keynote address was delivered by Dr. Tiachuba Jamir, CCO of Mokokchung, wherein he mentioned the importance of vaccination in livestock, especially in pigs with reference to classical swine fever (CSF). He also emphasised the importance of hygiene practices in meat production and public health safety.

Various topics ranging from animal housing, breed selection, care and management, feeding management, diseases and healthcare, marketing strategies of piggery and poultry were presented during the course of the programme.

Resource persons were Dr. Watitoshi Jamir, Dr. Ketinaro Aier, Dr. Wapangsashi and Dr. Nemjemyanger Kubzari.

The programme was attended by 50 farmers from different blocks under Mokokchung district.
