Venuzo Dawhuo wins Chakhesang Wrestling Championship title for record fourth time

CHOZUBA — Reigning champion Venuzo Dawhuo scripted record on Friday by winning the Chakhesang Wrestling Association (CWA) Championship title for the fourth consecutive time after defeating Vemele Thingo in the final of the 29th CWA Wrestling Championship and 3rd Under-16 Meet at Chozuba town in Phek district.

He had earlier won the CWA Championship title in 2018, 2020 and 2022, before retaining the title this year. He also holds the distinction of winning the Chokri Area Wrestling Association (CAWA) Championship titles in 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2024.

The 27-year-old wrestler, who hails from Thenyizu village, weights 105 kg and stands 5.10 feet tall, while his opponent Vemele Thingo is from Thipuzu village, weighs 100 kg and is 6.2 feet tall.

Dawhuo won INR 2, 50, 000 along with Lt Chosanyi Rose Memorial Running Championship Belt, INR 20, 000 and a citation, while the 24-year-old Thingo received INR 1, 70, 000 for the runner-up title.

Third prize winner Rukukhoto Khesoh (24) from Yoruba village was awarded INR 1,30,000, while Huluyi D Vade-o (21) of Sakraba village, who stood in the fourth position, received INR 1,00,000.

In the semi-final, Vemele Thingo defeated Rukukhoto Khesoh while Venuzo Dawhuo defeated Huluyi D Vade-o on their way to the final.

Under-16 category

Fifteen-year-old Khriethoveyi of Suthozu village won the title in the Under-16 category, for which he was awarded INR 50,000, while runner-up Khrüzo Tetseo (15) of Khulazu Basa received INR 30,000. The third position holder Nüo Swuro (15) of Porba village and fourth position holder Ngosa Tunyi (15) were awarded INR 15,000 and INR 10,000 respectively.

The quarter finalists of the senior category were awarded INR 15,000 each and INR 5, 000 each for the under-16.

The Phek Area Wrestling Association (PAWA) won the group champion, for which it received INR 20,000, while Secheku Wrestling Association was awarded INR 10,000 for the best discipline.

It may also be mentioned that Vezohu Ruho will lead the new team of CWA as the president for the tenure 2024-28.
