A noticeably frustrated Dimapur Urban Councils Chairmen Federation (DUCCF) on Monday issued a statement declaring that the undergrounds should no longer serve any “letter of taxation” or pressurize community leaders to collect it on their behalf. Even the public has placed a stand against paying tax, the organization questioned, how could the leaders of the public themselves collect tax for the underground groups.
The councils’ chairman reminded the undergrounds that the Naga public has realized that ‘paying tax’ was now futile that the political movement had become a “divided house”. The DUCCF said that the aspirations of the Naga people will not be fulfilled ‘if things continue in the present trend’.
“Dimapur Urban Councils Chairmen Federation respects the Naga national movement. And will always endeavor towards a strong, united Naga nation. But as the Naga public has realized that so long as the Naga national movement stays a divided house it’s futile to pay tax,” the community leaderships stated in the press release. “Nagas aspirations and dreams will never be fulfilled if things continue in the present trend”.
Based on the decision made on October 31, in 2013 during a public rally, under the aegis of the popular Against Corruption and Unabated Taxation, the DUCCF had since resolved not to collect any “tax” for the Naga political groups, the organization said. The community leaders’ organization said it stands firmly on the principle of ‘one government, one tax’.
“The federation strongly feels that the various colony councils have been instituted to serve the interest of the general public, without any fear or favor, and not to act in any way that is detrimental to the wishes of the Naga public. When the public have decided not to pay how can the council members collect tax for Naga political groups?” the statement read.
Therefore, the DUCCF has urged the Naga underground groups not to serve any ‘letter of taxation’ or to pressurize the urban council chairmen to collect tax on their behalf.
“And it is also for general information that all the members of DUCCF are members of ACAUT Nagaland. DUCCF reiterates its unflinching support to the ACAUT Nagaland Movement,” the chairmen added.
