Dimapur, Oct.9 (EMN): Two police personnel from 6th Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) battalion, rescued a woman who had jumped into Dhansiri River near Urban Haat in Dimapur on October 7.
The two personnel were 35-year-old Tingzang Konyak from Shangsa village and 30-year-old Ting-O Konyak from Ngangting village.
Tingzang Konyak told Eastern Mirror that they had gone to the market on Oct.7, and while returning, they saw a huge crowd gathered at Dhansiri Bridge, which had also caused a traffic jam, at around 12 pm.
The duo, who are both from Tizit in Mon district, stopped their bike to see what was going on. On enquiry, they were told that a woman had jumped into the river in a bid to allegedly commit suicide.
Distressed at the sight of the crowd ‘busy taking videos’ instead of attempting to rescue the woman, the two personnel, who were off-duty, went into the river to rescue her.
“We saw her clinging on a rock when we went down. As police personnel and more importantly as a human, we did not think twice when we went in to rescue her. The sight of people watching and taking videos of the woman who was struggling in the water was disturbing. What made her do that was not important but rescuing a human and showing humanity was more important”, he said.
He said that after rescuing the woman, they handed her over to the police personnel who had reached the incident site.
Tingzang Konyak further expressed hope that people can show kindness by lending a helping hand to those in need or distress instead of taking videos.
