Wokha, 13 June (EMN): The Government High School (GHS) at Kilomi in Zunheboto and GHS at Yamhon Old in Wokha district were among a dozen government schools in the state that recorded 100% success in the recently declared High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination conducted by NBSE this year.
Interestingly, the Education department has deactivated (downgraded to Class 8 from 10) both the schools through a notification in September last year over low enrolment of students.
The GHS, Kilomi was upgraded to Class 10 in 2014 and the GHS in Yamhon Old a year ago. Despite recording a cent percent success in the recent HSLC exam, these schools interestingly had only one student each (both male), who passed.
For GHS, Yamhon Old, the first and only candidate who enrolled and appeared for the HSLC examination, passed.
Headmaster of the school, Enibemo Yanthan told Eastern Mirror that teachers put in efforts to help the lone student even as teaching was disrupted by the pandemic. He said that they even took care of the student’s accommodation till the time of appearing the exam and assisted in his transportation to the exam centre at Bhandari GHSS.
However, due to the government’s downgrade order, students from 37 neighbouring villages under Yamhon area can’t study up to Class 10 in the school, he said.
Yanthan said that the GHS could have made progress if it was given a chance in the next academic session, as the Yamhon area enrolled and appeared the HSLC exam for the first time. He added that few students were willing to register for Class 9 and 10 in the current academic session, but had to back out.
A teacher from GHS, Kilomi also said that the administration and teachers were giving extra effort as the school had failed to produce good results for the past three years. The source added that they helped and guided the lone student from the school to appear the HSLC exam this year.
However, this GHS which is said to be catering to Khughuto, Chishili, Chisholi, Hebolimi, and Kilomi villages under Pughoboto sub-division, is now downgraded.
It was informed that teachers are still posted in Kilomi and Yamhon GHSs despite the downgrading order.
The teachers informed that the schools were willing to continue Class 9 and 10 for the next academic session if the department gives another chance. They further urged the parents to send their children to government schools, assuring to provide quality education.
