Tuensang and Pfutsero promote green Diwali celebration
DIMAPUR — Tuensang and Pfutsero town councils have launched ‘Swachh Diwali, Shubh Diwali’ from November 6 to the 12th with an aim to promote green Diwali celebration by avoiding single-use plastic and other pollutants.
The additional deputy commissioner (ADC) and administrator of Tuensang Town Council (TTC), ThungchanbemoTungoe, banned the sale and use of firecrackers within its jurisdiction with immediate effect saying that ‘Diwali is the festival of lights and not firecrackers.’
The order was issued in alignment with the growing global awareness of the adverse environmental and health impacts associated with fireworks as well as the increasing emphasis on reducing single-use plastic waste, a DIPR report stated.
In another notification, the ADC of Pfutsero, Achumbemo, called upon all the Gaon Buras (GBs) and ward chairmen of Pfutsero town to disseminate information to all Diwali celebration committees.
The directive emphasised the need to make Diwali celebrations in Pfutsero clean, green, free from single-use plastics and devoid of pollution. Additionally, the directive highlighted the importance of prioritising both pre and post-Diwali cleanliness in line with the objectives of the Swachh Bharat campaign.
It stated that the efforts made by the Pfutsero authorities are aimed at promoting an environmentally responsible and sustainable Diwali celebration, thereby contributing to a cleaner and healthier community.
