DIMAPUR — A training-cum-skill development workshop for women leaders under the National Clean Air Programme was held in Dimapur on Monday by the district administration of Dimapur at Lotha Hoho Ki.

According to a DIPR report, Imlijungla Lemtur, EAC Dimapur, noted in her welcome address that Dimapur is one of the two cities in Nagaland declared a non-attainment city due to its air quality standards being below the national average for five consecutive years.

Citing the burning of waste as one of the reasons for polluted air, she stressed the importance of efficient waste management techniques for reducing air pollution.

Manpai Phom, the administrator of the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), stressed the importance of taking action at both the community and household levels. He stated that a pilot project for door-to-door waste collection has already commenced in the Duncan and Riverbelt colonies.

In these areas, smaller trucks are making two to three rounds for waste collection, and households are disposing of segregated waste, he informed, adding that handholding, along with community and household participation, is crucial in addressing the issue of waste management.

In the technical session, Olivi G Chophy, senior scientific assistant at the Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), emphasised in her presentation the importance for women leaders to utilise the knowledge gained to foster a brighter future.

She urged them to not only educate themselves but also their family members and society as a whole. Chophy highlighted that air pollution primarily affects children and elderly individuals.

Meanwhile, a workshop on waste management techniques was conducted by Team PRO RURAL.

According to reports, in 2022, Dimapur and Chümoukedima combined generated 115 metric tonnes per day. Of this total, 70% was from waste collected and disposed of at the trenching ground, while the remaining 30% was from litter scattered in drains, lanes, rivers, and corners.
