KOHIMA— A one-day training for volunteer teachers (VT) on New India Literacy Programme (NILP) was held in Mon town on June14.
NILP was launched by the government of India for implementation during five years from 2022-23 to 2026-27. The programme aims to cover a target of five crore learners during the five years under foundational literacy and numeracy component. The programme has five objectives namely foundational literacy and numeracy, critical life skills, vocational skills development, basic education and continuing education, an update from the Education department stated.
Speaking at the training programme, SDO (C) and guest of honour, Rongsenmenla, has stressed on the need to increase the level of literacy for progressive society.
“With the introduction of NILP in line with National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the volunteer teachers must put their best effort to help eradicate illiteracy,” she said.
In a keynote address, Rokozeho Sothu, nodal officer of School Education department, informed that the objective of NILP was to make all citizens of the country literate by 2030.
“As per 2011 Census, Mon has 71,538 illiterate persons. The target of the School Education department is to make at least 38,394 people literate in Mon district,” he said.
He further urged the volunteer teachers to reach out rural populace.
The programme was chaired by Lipshing Konyak, supervisor of Adult Education (AE), while the welcome address was delivered by I Moala Aier, district education officer Mon.
The master trainers of the programme were Yankang Konyak and Hengang Konyak.
It stated that more than 100 volunteer teachers attended the training.
