Toyota to launch next-gen Fortuner and two new SUVs in India
Japanese auto giant, Toyota, is expanding its SUV portfolio in the Indian market, with plans to launch several new models within the next few years. Already, they have introduced the Innova Hycross and Hyryder SUVs in India, with the Maruti Suzuki Fronx-based SUV Coupe set to join them this year. The company is also developing the next-generation Fortuner SUV which it plans to release in 2024.
According to reports, Toyota is developing a new 3-row SUV tailored for the Indian market, based on the Corolla Cross SUV sold worldwide and built on the TNGA-C platform, which supports the Innova Hycross. This 7-seater Corolla Cross SUV will face competition from popular models such as the Hyundai Alcazar, Mahindra XUV700, and Jeep Meridian. The upcoming SUV will have a longer wheelbase of around 150mm to fit an extra row of seats, and Toyota will offer a choice of two engines, including a 172bhp, 2.0-litre naturally-aspirated petrol engine and a 186bhp, 2.0-litre petrol engine with self-charging hybrid technology.
Additionally, Toyota is gearing up to unveil the next-generation Fortuner on a global stage in 2024, showcasing fresh exteriors, revamped interiors, and a new engine option. This vehicle will use the TNGA-F architecture, which is also used in other models such as the Land Cruiser, Sequoia, and Tundra. To boost its performance, the new diesel engine will feature a mild hybrid system.
Finally, Toyota’s highly anticipated A15 SUV Coupe will be based on the Maruti Suzuki Fronx crossover and will take inspiration from the design elements of the Yaris Cross. The A15 will be available with two petrol engine options, including a 100bhp, 1.0-litre 3-cylinder Boosterjet turbo engine and an 89bhp, 1.2-litre Dualjet 4-cylinder petrol engine. It must be noted that both engines will come equipped with Suzuki’s mild hybrid technology.
