Imphal, March 24 (EMN): Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) MLA Thokchom Satyabrata Singh of Yaiskul Assembly Constituency was unanimously elected as the speaker of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

BJP MLA Dr. Sapam Ranjan Singh of Kopnthoujam constituency moved the motion nominating Satyabrata for the post of speaker, which was seconded by MLA Kongkham Robindro Singh of Mayang Imphal constituency, following which the motion was passed.

Leader of the house, chief minister N Biren Singh along with senior member of the opposition bench, Okram Ibobi Singh escorted the new speaker to his chair.

Singh also thanked the members of the house for unanimously electing Satyabrata and added that in a democracy, the state assembly and parliament are considered temples of democracy and the resolutions and decisions taken in this house decide the fate of the entire population of the state.

Ibobi also expressed belief that the speaker will uphold the democratic values, principles, rule of procedure and conduct of the house act under the Indian Constitution in an impartial manner, while making his decisions when the house is in session.

Meanwhile, thanking the members of the house, speaker Satyabrata said that he will work to meet the expectation of the members of the august house besides following the decorum and dignity of the house.

Elected for the first time from Yaiskul seat in 2017 assembly elections, Satyabrata was the Consumers Affairs and Public distribution minister (2020-2021) in the previous BJP led coalition government in the state.

He was re-elected from Yaiskul seat in the recently concluded assembly election by defeating his nearest contender and National People’s Party candidate Huidrom Vikramjit Singh by a margin of 632 votes.
