Two residential houses were completely destroyed, while more than 50 houses were partially destroyed by strong winds that blew through Merangkong village in Mokokchung district on Thursday evening. The strong winds lasted for around 2-3 minutes but disrupted normal life of the villagers severely.
Sub divisional officer (civil) of Tuli, Arikumba confirmed over a telephonic interaction that two residential houses were completely destroyed while 50 more were partially damaged. He added that more 50 families affected by the incident have been evacuated by volunteers. The families are now taking shelter in their relatives’ houses around the village, he said.
There are no reports of casualties, he said.
After the incident, officials comprising the officer, and officials of Tuli police visited the village the same evening. Arikumba said they had a meeting with the leaders of the village council and discussed the matter.
In the meeting, the officials decided to extend ‘all possible assistance to the affected families and individuals with assistance from the village council along with contribution from nongovernmental organizations and volunteers from the village to repair the damaged houses.’
The exact cost of damage could be estimated at the time of filing this new report.
