KOHIMA — The two-day State Level Youth Festival, organised by the Youth Resources and Sports (YRS) department in collaboration with the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), got underway at the Indira Gandhi Stadium (IGS), Kohima, on Thursday.

Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, S Keoshu Yimkhiung, the special guest at the inaugural ceremony, in his address, emphasised that the festival is not just a celebration but a powerful testament to the vibrancy, potential, and resilience of Nagaland’s youth.

“Our gathering today marks the convergence of creativity, energy, and the indomitable spirit of young people from across the state,” the advisor said.

Yimkhiung also said that the festival aligns with the shared vision of empowering the next generation, fostering unity, and building a community that value its rich cultural heritage while preparing for future challenges.

He encouraged the participants to view the festival as more than just a platform to showcase talent, describing it as a melting pot of ideas where young minds come together to share dreams, learn from each other, and contribute to building a stronger, more resilient community.

“The diverse activities lined up for this festival – from sports to cultural performances, workshops to discussions – reflect the dynamic spirit of our youth,” he underlined.

The advisor went on to state that each event presents an opportunity for participants to learn, grow, and push the boundaries of what they can achieve together.

“It is in these moments that leaders are born, and it is through these experiences that lifelong friendships and networks are forged,” Yimkhiung said, urging participants to seize every opportunity to let their passion shine through in each performance, match, and discussion.

He reminded them that they are representing not just themselves, but also their communities, cultures, and generation, and encouraged them to inspire and be inspired.

The advisor also underscored the collaboration between the Youth Resources and Sports department and the NSDMA as a significant step toward integrating disaster preparedness into youth development.

He emphasised the need for youth to be equipped not only with skills in sports and the arts but also with knowledge and resilience to respond to crises in an increasingly climate-affected world.

“This partnership symbolises a holistic approach to youth empowerment, where physical, mental, and civic preparedness are given equal importance,” he remarked.

Further, terming the State Level Youth Festival 2024 as a festival of hope, resilience, and boundless possibilities, he urged the participants to carry forward the lessons, friendships, and memories created during the festival toward a future that empowers both youths and leaders.

Karen Rose, assistant manager of media and public relations at NSDMA, also addressed the event.

The welcome address was delivered by Anthony Ngullie, Secretary to the Government of Nagaland, while a special song was performed by Neilakuonuo Metha. The programme was led by Kethosituo Sekhose, Director of Youth Resources and Sports.

Day one featured competitions in folk song, folk dance, declamation and a science mela.

On September 27, a painting competition will be held, after which participants will proceed to RCEMPA for the finale of the ‘Battle of the Bands’ for schools, followed by the valedictory function. MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhutso will be the special guest for the closing ceremony.
