Stakeholders asked to make concerted efforts to ban plastics

Stakeholders asked to make concerted efforts to ban plastics

DIMAPUR — Member secretary of Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), K Hukato Chishi, has elucidated that the issue of waste management can be solved only when people learn the right way of disposing and stop using single-use plastics and also by making necessary changes in lifestyle.

Chishi stated that during workshop-cum-training session on waste management and ban on single-use plastic (SUP) organised by Tribal Welfare Society, in collaboration with Nagaland Pollution Control Board (NPCB), in Sovima village on Tuesday. Delivering a keynote address, Chishi highlighted the adverse impacts of single-use plastic items on both terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, including marine environments.

Stating that pollution due to single-use plastic items has become an important environmental challenge confronting all countries, he has stressed the need to raise awareness among others and emphasised that the success of the ban on single-use plastic would only be possible through effective engagement and concerted actions by all stakeholders.

He informed that NPCB would study and work on how solid waste management and a ban on SUP could be successfully implemented in the village. He has particularly stressed the necessity of waste segregation.

While replying to the question of why the authorities are checking only plastic bags and not the other form of plastics, he said the policymakers are taking decisions on such issues. He further remarked that every individual should know how to improve their lifestyle and their environment.

The chairman of Sovima Village Council (SVC), Sebastian Zumvü, has shared about the activities undertaken by the village in the last few years. He informed that the sanitation committee has been working tirelessly to keep the village clean by collecting garbage from every household.

While mentioning the problem in the segregation of waste, he expressed confidence that they would overcome the problem.

He has also highlighted the plantation drive adopted by the village on the theme “Go green, plant trees” where they have planted more than thousands of trees. He also informed that the village has banned hunting in the village. He further urged the government to adopt Sovima as a model village. Resource persons from NPCB namely Mvudzeviu Shuya, Scientist ‘B’, spoke on ‘Ban of SUP,’ while Yanathung Kithan, Scientist ‘B,’ spoke on ‘Solid waste management,’ and Akangmeren Imchen, Scientist ‘B,’ spoke on ‘Composting and 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’).
