Dimapur, Jan. 3 (EMN): The first phase of agitation for Shamator sub-division district demand began on Monday at all administrative headquarters led by the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC).
A statement from YTC media cell informed that various organisations responded to the call of YTC at Pungro town.
Government offices except the administration, bank, PHED, medical, police, power and paramilitary were shut down, it informed.
It said that business establishments also joined the protest by putting their shutter down to show solidarity and support to YTC on first day of first phase of agitation.
It stated that the protest was held following the failure of the state government to declare Shamator a district before Dec. 31, 2021.
YTC stated that the demand for upgrading Shamator into a district began in 2003, and since then several representationa and reminder letters had submitted to the state government by the Council.
It further stated that the state government had also assured YTC to fulfill the ‘long aspiration of Yimkhiung people in lieu of unopposed NDPP MLA in the last bye-election for 58 Shamator-Chessore A/C held in October 2021’.
