DIMAPUR — District Mental Health Programme (DMHP), Dimapur, and Chümoukedima Town Baptist Pastors’ Fellowship (CTBPF) have jointly organised a one-day seminar on mental health awareness at Town Baptist Church, Chümukedima, on Saturday.
Kikruwheno Terhuja, DMHP clinical psychologist, while presenting an overview on mental health, has quoted WHO, which defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well being and not merely the absence of diseases and infirmities, stated an update from Dr. Temsuyanger, DMHP district nodal officer.
She shared that some of the signs of a good mental health are realising one’s ability, being able to cope with normal stresses in life, able to work productively and being able to contribute to the society.
She further stated that stress is one of the main factors which trigger mental illness. She, however, stated that a little stress in life is normal and good for development as it motivate to discipline oneself. She added that a prolonged stress could lead to a major mental illness. She informed that the simple ways to deal with stress are to prioritise work, being organised, have a hobby, develop a support system, and regulate use of social media platforms.
“If the stress prolongs, it is best to seek professional help,” she said.
Dr. Temsuyanger presented some of the common symptoms of mental and psychological disorders. He also debunked some of the common misconceptions associated mental health and discussed drugs and alcohol use disorders in both adolescents and adults.
The SDO of Chümoukedima, Temsuchuba, while delivering words of encouragement, shared that as per the mental health survey conducted in 2016, 14% of Chümoukedima’s population requires mental health treatment.
“Mental health awareness is needed today more than ever. An imbalance mental health creates an imbalance society,” Temsuchuba said.
He, therefore, stated that the church, which is the best platform to disseminate awareness in the society, should take initiative in spreading awareness on mental health as well. He further shared that one of the best way to have mental stability is to have good relationship with God.
The opening remarks and prayer was delivered by Teiciesalhou Denuh, pastor of Chakhesang Baptist Church, Chümoukedima, and the closing prayer was delivered by Neingusazo Kire, pastor of Town Baptist Church, Chümoukedima.
