Security forces destroying illegal poppy plantations in Kamjong district in Manipur.

Huge areas of poppy plantations measuring around 169 acres were destroyed at several villages in Manipur’s Kamjong district on Monday.

According to an official source made available, the poppy destruction drive was carried out under the strong supervision from District Administration Kamjong led by the Deputy Commissioner Rangnamei Rang Peter.

A total of around 110 acres of poppy cultivation was destroyed at the Phungyar sub-division of the district. The drive was led by SDO Phungyar Rang David along with the support of Ukhrul district Additional SPs Syed Samad and Syed Samir.

While in Thawai village, 70 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed by an Officer in Charge (OC) of Litan police station led by a combined team of Police and Manipur Rifles. Around 130 volunteers from the village also extended co-operation by joining the destruction.’

In Marou village, 20 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed by a combined team of Phungyar police station led by its OC and Manipur Rifles personnel.

In Tangkhul Hungdung village, 19 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed by the police personnel of Phungyar police station and SP Kamjong office.

On the other hand, more than 25 acres of poppy plantation were destroyed at Maokot village of Sahampung sub-division of Kamjong district. Led by SDO Sahampung Philip John, the destruction was carried out by a combined team of SP Office Kamjong, personnel of Manipur Rifles, Narcotics Affairs of Border, Manipur Police Training Centre and Forest (Kamjong).

Monday’s drive comes under the Chief Minister N Biren-led State Government’s ‘War Against Drugs’ Mission and Zero Tolerance Policy against Poppy Plantation.
