Dimapur, September 4

A students’ organization has said that the number of vehicular mishaps along National Highway-2, the erstwhile National Highway-61, which passes through Tseminyu subdivision, has increased due to the deplorable condition of the road. The pathetic condition of the highway is the “only good reason” for the mishaps, the Rengma Students’ Union said on Friday. The organization issued a press release on September 4 demanding that the government and the development departments to “show some sign of sympathy.”
‘The Rengma Students’ Union appeals the concern department to look over the pathetic condition of NH-02 (earlier 61), passing through Tseminyu sub-division.
It is to be made known that between the date 18th till 26th August 3, accident cases have been noticed, but with no causalities,’ the union said. The union also listed in the press release several vehicles, including goods carriers, which it said were involved in the mishaps.
“…the only good reason is the pathetic road condition,” the union said. “The present road condition is so worst that if any patient under emergency case is to be taken from Tseminyu to Kohima hospitals as it being the nearest, there is no possibility that any patient will survive. The distance between Kohima to Dimapur is 72 km and it takes 3 hours at the maximum to travel whereas the distance between Kohima to Tseminyu is just 50 km yet it takes more time in travelling.”
The union queried as to how long will the condition of the roads in Tseminyu sub-division would remain “compromised.” The sub-division is one of the oldest and with the highest number of villages among sub-divisions in Kohima district yet it had “the worst road facility,” the Rengma students said in lament.
“Therefore, the Rengma Students’ union urges the concern department / government to show a sign of sympathy at the earliest for the welfare of the Rengmas and for harmony and progress of the Nagas in general.”
