Kohima, April 7 (EMN): Rev. L Mankup Konyak, the first ordained minister among the Konyak Nagas, passed away on Wednesday at his native village Tamlu in Longleng district. He was 99.
Sources told Eastern Mirror that the funeral service for the Reverend will be held from his native village on Friday morning, April 9.
Born in 1922 at Tamlu village to T Longa and Shükna, Konyak did his early schooling at LP School in Tamlu (1938-1942), at Impur (1943-1945) and then at Chuchuyimlang (1946-1948).
He served as the pastor of Tamlu village from 1949 to 1951 and went on to pursue technical studies at Kohima Junior Technical School from 1951-1954 and subsequently appointed as the instructor for the same school in 1955 before resigning.
He was ordained on March 5, 1967 at Kongan Baptist Church and served the Konyak Baptist Bumeinok Bangjüm (Konyak Baptist Church Association) as Field supervisor from 1974 to 1975 and then in 1977.
He went on to serve as Mission Evangelism Director from 1977 to 1979 for the Konyak Churches and later served as the First Eastern Missionary-cum-Mission and Evangelism Director from 1985 to 1991.
Besides his immense contribution towards the church, he served as the president of Konyak Students’ Union from 1954 to 1956 and from 1959 to 1960. He was also the founding member of Konyak Tribal Union and adopted the Konyak “uniform shawls” both for men and women.
