NEW DELHI, FEBRUARY 24

Union Minister M Venkaiah Naidu, after meeting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs from Haryana on the Jat quota agitation, on Wednesday said that reservation is a delicate issue and the Government needs to proceed with caution so that no section is adversely affected.
Naidu, who heads a panel examining the Jat demand for reservation in government jobs under the Other Backward Classes category, held a meeting of the Committee along with Haryana BJP MPs at his home in the morning.
Addressing reporters, Naidu said: “Reservation should be done properly. The issue is before the Court. We need to proceed so that no one is affected.”
On Tuesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court asked the Haryana government to file a status report on the Jat agitation by Monday.
“Is a delicate situation and we have to see that no one harmed,” he said.
His comments come as Haryana limped back to normal after days of tension and violence after people from the Jat community blockaded streets and train lines to press for their demand for quota in government jobs. On Tuesday, highway and rail traffic was restored even as security forces were put on alert to foil clashes between Jats and those of other communities.
19 people have been killed and nearly 200 injured in the nine days of unrest by Jats so far. Property, including private vehicles and shops, has been damaged by the protesters.
