KOHIMA — The Nagaland football community has mourned the demise of iconic footballer Kezhakholie Pusa, affectionately called ‘Akho,’ who breathed his last on Monday (Dec. 11) night in Kohima.

Hailing from Viswema village, 48-year-old Akho, a skilled defender, left an indelible mark in the football circuit.

Having undergone Indian trials in Delhi, he showcased his prowess on both regional and national stages, representing the state of Nagaland in the Santosh Trophy and Subroto Cup during his prime.

Akho, also a government teacher, showcased his multifaceted talents in the All Indian Civil Services Tournament and various Northeast-level football competitions.

Known for his dedication, he became a stalwart in local tournaments, notably as a formidable player for New Market XI, an established team in Kohima.

His monikers “Beast Master,” “Jesus,” “Jon Bon Jovi,” and “War Horse of New Market XI,” reflected not only his physical prowess but also his charismatic presence on the field.

Fondly remembered by fans and colleagues, he was more than just a player; he was a cooperative and cherished teammate.

“A prolific footballer who had played at the national level and brought laurels to the state,” said Keneido Peseyie, a football enthusiast and former goalkeeper of New Market XI.

“His defensive tactics are innovative and unique that has earned him the sobriquet of the Great Wall of China,” said Peseyie,

Ruopfu Meyase, the state football coach, reminisced about Akho’s honesty and noted the confidence he brought to the team representing the state in major football tournaments.

Meyase, a former goalkeeper, also recalled their joint victories playing for New Market XI including lifting the Classic Cup in 1995 and 1998.

His former New Market XI teammates including Dakho Rezü, Diethozolie Peseyie, Malodi Temi, Khrüpavil Hibo and Ruokuosatuo Khezhie, also praised Akho’s discipline, passion for the game and leadership qualities, both on and off the field.

The departure of Akho, also a football coach, is a significant loss to aspiring footballers, particularly those from New Market colony.

His impact extended beyond the pitch, as he also served as the president of the New Market Youth Organisation (NMYO). NMYO celebrated its golden jubilee a day before he passed away.

Condolences poured in from various organisations, highlighting the profound impact Akho had on the football fraternity.

In a poignant farewell programme held at New Market colony on Tuesday morning, condolences were shared by those who knew him closely.
