KOHIMA, DECEMBER 30

It is time for the current generation of the Naga to realize that complacence no longer serves and now they must take control of their destiny and future, a politician has said in his advice to students.
‘Time has come for the present generation on the need to change their thinking and attitude regarding their own future in life: we need to be master of our own destiny so that we can collectively work for our future, a vision for a brighter and vibrant Nagaland tomorrow, said legislator Dr Neiphrezo Keditsu on Wednesday, December 30, in Nerhema village, in Kohima district.
The chairman of the Nagaland State Mineral Development Corporation Ltd was speaking as the chief guest of the golden jubilee program of the Nerhema Students’ Union. The event was conducted under the theme ‘Transcendence’ at Tekhuzie, of Nerhema village.
Dr Keditsu maintained that with many challenges and competitiveness in all spheres of life, students need to be ‘farsighted, focused and determined’ to be successful in life.
In his advising the students, the MLA asserted that in today’s time they need to be more focused, determined and hardworking: they should not study for the sake of studying just to secure degrees or to graduate, but study to be skilled and to develop oneself, and be able to earn one’s livelihood. At the same time, he said, they must learn to be contributors and ‘a blessing’ to the society.
Dr. Keditsu also remarked that the ‘Nagas like to be jack of all trades but master of none, for which we fail to reach and achieve our target and aspiration.’ Nonetheless, there’s nothing that can stop anyone from achieving the aspirations and dreams one desires in life ‘if one has the focus, target and ambition in any field.’
Also, the MLA noted that with the stiff competition among nations of the world in all fields, the time has come for the younger generation to ponder on many things: the need to ‘make up one’s mind and take action for a better future for our fellow Nagas and help our people.’
Although there is a ‘wide gap between the older and the younger generation,’ he remarked, the wisdom and tradition practiced by the forefathers need to be preserved and adhered to by the present generation. In this regard, he urged parents to put more efforts in guiding the young towards preservation of culture and tradition.
The legislator has urged the students to ‘keep in mind the vision, goals and the ideology of pioneers and torchbearers who set up the union.’ With the celebration of a golden jubilee and the coming New Year, he called upon all to step forward ‘with unity, understanding, wisdom and make an effort to do better things for the people and the society.’
In his greetings, the president of the Angami Students’ Union, Dievi Yano, said that ‘as a student we need to accept the various confronting challenges to transcend beyond the horizon.’ He said that the time had come for the students to ‘steadfastly face the realities of the present day and weed out the destructive factors in our society to be successful.’
The students’ leader hoped that the NSU would continue to be a torchbearer in ‘amplifying the spirit of oneness and unity amongst the people, and stimulating the younger generation to bring laurels and achieve greater heights.’
