DIMAPUR — As Cyclone Remal has made landfall over South Bangladesh and is now a deep depression impacting Northeast India, Nagaland is expected to experience moderate rainfall with occasional heavy spells in the coming week.

On Tuesday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a ‘red alert’ warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall, with a possibility of extremely heavy falls exceeding 204.4 mm, in Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on May 28.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) is also expected in these states on May 29, it said.

Meanwhile, the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) has issued an alert, noting that wind speeds may range from moderate to strong across many parts of Nagaland from May 27 to the 29th.

“Until the first week of June 2024, fairly widespread rain and thunderstorms are predicted for many areas,” it said.

In light of the approaching monsoon, the NSDMA requested district disaster management authorities and line departments to be on high alert and remain vigilant. It also urged the public to exercise caution and refrain from activities such as fishing and picnicking during the monsoon season.
