KOHIMA, AUGUST 9: Heavy downpour on Sunday evening led to soil erosion in many areas, including in Kohima town.
The downpour continued for almost two hours which reportedly caused landslides later, especially in the regularly-sinking portions along the stretch of National Highway-29.
Vehicles plying on NH-29 were reportedly halted for hours as loads of mud which fell from above covered the road, making it difficult for small vehicles to pass through. It was reported that vehicles with high ground clearance somehow managed to pass through. However, those with low clearance had a difficult time crossing it.
Some vehicles waited for hours to cross the sinking portions, sources informed. If heavy rain continues for the next few days, there are chances of the road being blocked or cut off at some portions.
A hotel, the Step Inn-Highway Dhaba along the highway, which is located below the old check post, was also affected following a considerable portion of the road adjacent to it sinking. The hotel was built just about a year ago. There is every chance of the hotel being carried away if the sinking zone expands towards the house.
Other areas which remain at risk of been cut off include the portion below the Naga Hospital, below Merhülietsa colony (Paramedical, near the Satuo Petrol Pump), the portion below Jotsoma village near the mandir and at the point near the Dzüdza Bridge.
