Dimapur, Feb. 21: Weather updates on Thursday cautioned residents of Nagaland about the possibility of increased rainfall from Feb. 15, which could last for days.

According to information available on the skymetweather website, rainfall in Nagaland will be scattered and light till Feb. 24. But the pace has been predicted to pick up on Feb. 25, “and will increase even further on Feb. 26 and the 27th.”

The northern half of Nagaland will receive more showers as compared to the southern areas. Two days of incessant rain will be accompanied by lightning strikes and strong winds, it predicted. In turn, these showers could cause landslides, inundation, and flash floods, according to the website.

In the past many winter seasons, Nagaland has not seen any good rains. “Since the year 2012, rains have been scanty to deficit during the winter season. In fact, it has been only 2016 which have observed near normal rains during winters,” it stated.

This year too, the report observed, Nagaland has followed similar path. “This winter for Nagaland is following a similar track with large deficiency persisting over the state. As of today, rainfall deficiency is persisting at -59%.”

The month of January was worse wherein the rain deficiency had exceeded 70%. However, few days of rains in February reduced the deficient figures to a marginal extent. In the month of February, the state has seen 15.3 mm of rains against its normal of 37.5 mm.

Meanwhile, the wintry evening weather in Nagaland seems to remain the same despite the coming end of winter season. Compared to the month of January, February’s weather seem to remain more or less the same.
