MOKOKCHUNG — Rainfall in Mokokchung town over the past few days triggered landslides in two locations.

A landslide occurred around 1:30 am, on Friday, in Tongdentsuyong, damaging three shops — a paan shop, a hotel, and a poultry shop. The District Administration and District Disaster Management Authority inspected the site and provided immediate relief to the affected individuals.

Earlier on June 27, another landslide was reported in Penli Ward of Mokokchung town at around 4 am, affecting four households and cutting off the main footpath to the ward.

The footpath is a crucial route for the residents of Penli Ward and serves as the main access route for the offices of the Assistant Labour Commissioner, Chief Medical Officer and NPTO.

After the State Disaster Management Response Force (SDRF) of Mokokchung was informed, a ten-member SDRF team arrived at the site by 5:30 am under the supervision of the deputy commissioner.

The team in-charge reported the landslide was caused by loose soil, resulting in the collapse of the footpath and its retaining wall.

Among the affected houses, the house belonging to Tsungtaluba Imchen (Lawrence Imchen) is at risk of collapsing, he said.

Efforts to manage the situation are ongoing, with the affected households organising labourers and family members to assist the SDRF team.

Tsungtaluba Imchen’s residence (House No. 20, Lawrence Imchen) is at risk of collapse. Affected households are working alongside the SDRF team to manage the situation.
