[dropcap]P[/dropcap]robe into the recent Assam violence has begun. The investigation has been done by the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Let us hope that the investigation agency comes up with its investigation report at the earliest.
Past instances of NIA or CBI taking too long a time in probing cases have disappointed the people. To cite one example, the case of the ambush by militants on Manipur legislator Wungnaoshang Keishing in the year 2011 is still underway. The case is being handled by the NIA. Several lives were claimed in the incident though the MLA was lucky to escape with injuries. The MLA who was eagerly waiting for the investigation report passed away one year later of heart attack. God knows when the investigation agency will come up with its reports on the matter.Regarding the Assam case too thousands of affected people want that justice is not delayed. The NIA should work on war footing and reveal the reports as soon as possible to soothe the hurt feelings and sentiments of the victim families.
Till date the police have registered 102 cases and it is likely that the number of cases will be increased. In the Christmas violence 81 lives have been claimed and nearly three lakh people were rendered homeless. Many are still in relief camps. So far 58 people have been arrested for their links with the violence unleashed by Bodo militants. Some people are still reported missing. According to Assam chief minister Tarun Gogoi , there were 2.9 lakh people in 136 relief camps few days ago but the number has decreased to 1.82 lakh in 102 relief camps in the four districts of Assam.
Militants hailing from National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) group opposed to peace talks had attacked Adivasis in five places in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Sonitpur districts on December 23 night. The incidents resulted to a backlash in Udalguri district. Several houses were set on fire, triggering displacement there too.
