New Delhi/Dimapur, Oct. 2 (PTI/EMN): President Droupadi Murmu paid floral tributes to the father of the nation at the Rajghat on his Jayanti on Sunday morning and urged people to “rededicate themselves to the values of his life.
She said that Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary serves as an occasion for everyone to “rededicate themselves to the values of his life” and urged everyone to follow his footsteps and walk the path of truth and non-violence.
“A century ago, Gandhiji inspired millions with his call of Swadeshi and his stress on self-reliance. The making of an Atmanirbhar Bharat, which is under way, is, thus, inspired by the vision of the Mahatma and is intended as a true tribute to him. The India of his dreams is a clean India, a healthy India. The initiatives taken in this regard have been bearing fruits now,” the President said in her message on this occasion.
“As we enter the Amrit Kaal, the period before the centenary of Independence, it is heartening to note that the young generation too has been taking inspiration from Gandhiji’s works. When the world is going to face more and more complex challenges, his life continues to serve as a lighthouse, helping us negotiate the path amid turbulent waters,” she said.
President Murmu also paid tributes to Lal Bahadur Shastri, former Prime Minister of India, at the Vijay Ghat on his birth anniversary.
“Humble tributes to former Prime Minister Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri ji on his birth anniversary. Shastri, who gave the slogan ‘Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan’, played a special role in Green Revolution and White Revolution. Shastri ji’s simplicity and high ideals are a source of inspiration for all the countrymen even today,” the President said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his birth anniversary, and urged everyone to purchase khadi and handicrafts products as a tribute to him.
He also fondly remembered India’s second prime minister Lal Bahadur Shastri, whose birth anniversary also falls on October 2, noting that he is admired across the country for his simplicity and decisiveness.

In tributes to Gandhi, Prime Minister Modi tweeted, “Paying homage to Mahatma Gandhi on Gandhi Jayanti . This Gandhi Jayanti is even more special because India is marking Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. May we always live up to Bapu’s ideals. I also urge you all to purchase Khadi and handicrafts products as a tribute to Gandhi Ji.”
In homage to Shastri, he said, “Lal Bahadur Shastri Ji is admired all across India for his simplicity and decisiveness. His tough leadership at a very crucial time of our history will always be remembered. Tributes to him on his Jayanti.”
The prime minister also shared some glimpses from his gallery in the ‘Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya’ in Delhi, which showcases Shastri’s life journey and accomplishments.

Rio pays tribute to Gandhi
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio also paid tribute to the ‘Father of the nation’ on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti .
“May we follow his path of non-violence, peace and harmony which guided diverse India towards independence. He remains an inspiration for all,” Rio shared.
