Police run for cause of girls and education

An event touting itself to be a “police-public marathon” was held on November 28 in collaboration with the State Resource Centre for Women (SRCW) in Kohima town. The event was conducted with the motto “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” (Save Girl Child, Educate Girl Child).
The marathon was flagged off by Director General of Police LL Doungel at the High School junction. In his brief address, the police chief said that the ultimate aim for the police and the people is for a peaceful society and that the main purpose for organizing the ‘police and public marathon’ was to bridge the gap between the police and the public in general.
The DGP also said that the effectiveness of modern policing will be greatly determined by a ‘close relationship with the citizen.’ The police department has been able to gain active support from the people, he claimed.
Mission Director State Resource Centre for Women Nagaland, Daisy Mezhur in her brief address requested the participants to change the mindset towards the girls and to take more initiative. She mentioned that it would bring the police and public more closer and bridge the gap for positive results in the coming days.
Chief Secretary of Nagaland Pankaj Kumar who graced the occasion as the chief guest for the closing ceremony held at PHQ added that the initiative taken by the Police department shows the growing coordination in the right direction with the active participation of the citizens and appreciated the efforts of bringing all the sections of the citizen closer and building better relationships.
ADGP (Law & Order) Rupin Kumar who also participated in the marathon in his brief address informed the gathering that more such program would be initiated in the coming years.
In the category A (10.5 kilometers) open for 18-years-old and above, the first prize was bagged by Pache Khiam from the 164th Territorial Army. He emerged as the champion and the second position was bagged by N. Puchang Khiam and the third by Thungti who walk away with Rs. 20,000 for the first prize and the second and third prize walk away with Rs. 15,000 and Rs. 10,000 respectively. In category B ie (age between 14-18 years) Iteipebo Nkie (RHSS) emerged as the champion and received Rs. 12,000 and second and third place was bagged by Tmanyasipong both walk away with Rs. 10,000 and Rs. 8000 respectively. Around 550 runners from other district participated in the marathon.
