Pochury’s Yemshe mini-Hornbill concludes at Meluri

Dimapur, Oct. 5 (EMN): Minister for Planning and Co-ordination, Neiba Kronu graced the second day of Yemshe mini-Hornbill at Meluri on Oct. 5 as the special guest. The festival was jointly organised by the government of Nagaland and the Pochury Hoho.

The special guest, while addressing the festival partakers, said that festivals are the time where people give thanks to the almighty and also invoke God’s blessings.

While extending greetings to the people of Pochury on the occasion of Yemshe festival, Kronu expressed happiness over the participation of people from the neighboring tribes viz. Chakhesang and Sangtam in the festivities which enhances relationship. He said that the land of the Pochury is blessed with natural resources, flora and fauna and enough water resources. He suggested that electricity be generated from river Tizu as Nagaland government is falling short of power and procuring power from other states thereby incurring huge losses to the tune of over hundred crores annually. He also announced that inland water ways from Tizu to Chinwing river has been approved by the government of India.

The day’s highlight included traditional games, folk dances and folk tunes from all the areas under Pochury. Archery and pole climbing competition were the special attractions of the day.

Meanwhile, Minister V. Kashiho Sangtam graced the first day of the festival as the special guest. He said that the Sangtams and Pochurys are brothers and that this age-old traditional bond has to be renewed. He also said that it is the government’s policy to host the mini-hornbill in all the district headquarters and sub-divisions in order to facilitate every community and villages to take part in the festivities of the concern community.

On the first day, legislator Yitachu, MLA from 20th A/C Meluri and Orenthung Lotha, DC Phek delivered Yemshe greetings to the gathering, while S. Akho Leryri spoke on the significance of Yemshe.

Advisor IPR exhorts Tsokum mini-Hornbill Festival at Noklak

Dimapur, Oct. 5 (EMN): The three day mini-Hornbill cum Tsokum festival of the Kiamniunnagn tribe culminated on Friday evening at Noklak which was marked by showcasing of the vibrant cultural songs and dances of the Kiamniunngan community and the neighbouring tribes and also other activities.

The closing function, hosted by MLA L. Khumo, advisor for fisheries, evaluation, economics and statistics; while MLA and Advisor for IPR Toshi Wungtung addressed the audience.

Advisor Toshi Wungtung, in his address, said that the entire Noklak region is one of the unexplored regions in the state and called for greater efforts to tap its hidden potentials so that it can become a tourist spot in the state. He said that with proper approach, the entire Noklak region, with thick forest in the region free from human interference, fresh water of multiple, streams, organic vegetables and rich cultures have the potential to attract tourists from abroad as well as domestic tourists.

Saying that chief minister also wanted to attend the festival but could not make it due to pressing official engagement, Wungtung appealed the people not to discourage by his absence in the three day program. Toshi expressed hope that Noklak district would soon be officially declared in the near future.

MLA and Advisor for DUDA, Bongkhao who also attended the closing program said that the celebration of Tsokum festival has assumed great significance as it brings unity and forgiveness by burying of enmity among the people through the act sharing and giving.

Host L. Khumo while delivering his speech appealed to the people to forget their misunderstandings and take lead to cement unity and peace in the societies. During the closing function Nokhu Noking village presented a display on how feud arises between two clans or two khels over land thereby leading to physical confrontation and bloodshed involving the entire clans or khels in olden days.
