Phukulo is Nagaland spelling bee champion

JOTSOMA — Phukulo Tsuhah on Friday emerged as champion of the 10th Nagaland spelling bee championship 2023 organised by Fountain Club and State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) held at RCEMPA in Jotsoma.

The champion, a class nine student from Vineyard School, Kohima, received a cash award of INR 80,000, a citation and a trophy. Lani A Imsong, also a class nine student from Minister’s Hill Baptist Higher Secondary School (MBHSS), Kohima, won the second position and received a cash award of INR. 60,000, citation and trophy, while Aiko Kiyala from Vineyard School won the third position and received a cash award of INR 40,000 and the fourth position was won by Elijah Ronren Kikon from Pilgrim Higher Secondary School, who received a cash award of INR 20,000.

The young speller award was awarded to Awana Pongen, a class 6 student of Rincho Academy, Sovima, who was awarded cash of INR 10,000.

The quarter-finalists Leine Kuotsu from Little Flower Higher Secondary School, Kohima; Visweyienu Savi from Loyola Higher Secondary School, Jakhama; Rovito Sahu from RDNUMS; and Natalia Murry from Christian Model High School. They received a cash award of INR 10,000 each.

MLA Dr. Tsielhoutuo Rhütso, who attended the closing function as the special guest, gave away the prizes to the winners.

In his address, he acknowledged the Fountain Club for organising the event and giving a platform to the students to showcase their talent. He also suggested that the preliminary rounds be held ahead and conclude the finale during the Hornbill Festival.

An overview of the competition was presented by Dr. Zavise Rume, deputy director of SCERT.

The valedictory programme was led by Sekholu Tetseo, while a song was presented by Neikehienuo Sothu and Ruokuovikho Chale, and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by the chairman of Fountain Club.

It may be mentioned that a total of 76 spellers representing 39 schools from Chümoukedima, Dimapur, Phek, Kohima, Wokha and Zunheboto districts have competed for the championship.
