THE People for Animals (PFA) Thoubal on Saturday celebrated the World Animal Day (WAD) and its 3rd foundation day at the picturesque Karang Island which is about 50 km south of Imphal located in the middle of Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in NE India.
Local leaders, local youth clubs, Meira Paibis and student of various schools of Lake Island (Karang) attended the celebration held at Karang primary School.
Many wildlife related activities including showing of audio visual aids and reactivation of ‘Greet our Guest’ campaign marked the day’s celebration which was targeted to protect the migratory birds that visits the state’s wetlands during winter.
Thanga village part-1 Gram Panchayat member Heisnan Ningthem was the chief guest while Salam Athoiba Meitei, Oinam Satyabati Devi and Officer-in- Charge Karang Police station Ningthoujam Sobha, headmaster Karang Primary School Salam Ibohal and Naik Subedar TB Pradhan of commander, Karang Post of 6 Assam Rifles were the special guests during the celebration.
Karang Island is known as one of the breeding and feeding sites of the migratory birds during the winter season.
Ningthem, in his address appealed to his villagers to protect wildlife and to show compassion to the animals. “I am quite grateful to PFA for organizing such an important program at our village,” he added. Chairperson AK Prem Meitei of PFA Thoubal informed the gathering that the PFA Thoubal has been changed as PFA Manipur with the advice of their Delhi head office. “This winter, PFA will do their best to protect migratory birds,” he added. “No poachers will be spared. We will keep an eye on hotels and food vendors of the state which offers bird meat. We will conduct meetings with village authorities including concern police officers to control poaching of birds.”
