OTC equips students with entrepreneurial skills

DIMAPUR — A five-day skill training programme at Oriental Theological College (OTC) in Yangli organised by the Nagaland Tool Room and Training Centre (NTRTC) concluded on Saturday.

The training programme began with a welcome speech delivered by the college principal, Dr. Chemtingla Sangtam. The trainers of the programme were Thüküngolü Swuro, S Pitoka Achumi, Keriesekho Miasalhou and Vesuto Rhakho.

An update from the college stated that the participants had the unique opportunity to explore five different trades namely banana fibre extraction, handicraft, handmade paper and pulp, waste management (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) and house wiring and maintenance, each designed to equip them with practical skills.

The initiative brought together more than 100 eager trainees. It added that the participants gained valuable hands-on experience, knowledge and skills in diverse trades, equipping them with the tools to pursue entrepreneurial opportunities and promote sustainability.

On the final day, participants shared their experiences and insights gained throughout the programme, reflecting on their personal growth and learning outcomes.

It stated that banana fibre extraction and handicraft participants learned the process of extracting fibres from banana plants, various techniques to create handicrafts using the fibres.

Trainer demonstrated the steps involved in the extraction process by emphasising the importance of sustainability and resource utilisation, while the participants actively engaged in hands-on activities, creating beautiful handicrafts and gaining valuable insights.

Participants of handmade paper and pulp production had the opportunity to experiment the paper-making process from pulp preparation to sheet formation besides highlighting the importance of recycling and sustainable practices in paper production, encouraging participants to explore eco-friendly alternatives. It stated that participants created their own unique handmade paper, showcasing their newfound expertise in this craft.

The waste management (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) participants learned innovative ways to manage waste effectively. The participants were equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement kitchen waste and domestic animals excrement into manure, create durable brooms from plastic bottles waste and making of brick out of polystyrene (thermocol) and waste glass.

The house wiring and maintenance participants learned to perform basic wiring installations and safety measures such as earthing. Additionally, hands-on activities allowed participants to practice wiring techniques under the guidance of experienced trainers. It stated that participants had gained valuable insights into house wiring and maintenance.

Report stated that the 5-day training provided not only valuable skills but also encouraged participants to think creatively and responsibly. It further stated that the programme has equipped participants with the tools to not only improve their lives but also contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable and eco-conscious world.
