KOHIMA, JULY 19

Several mass-based Naga organizations on Sunday met the IGAR (N) “on invitation” with regard to the July 16 incident at Phor village under Meluri sub-division, wherein two young students were killed in an indiscriminate firing.
As per reports received here following the meeting, the Assam Rifles conveyed their version of how things had happened leading to the Phor incident, to the leaders of social organisations present at the meeting which included the Naga Students’ Federation, Naga Hoho, Nagaland Tribes Council and Angami Public Organization among few others.
One of the organization leaders when contacted, said, “They (AR) clarified their position and said that social organisations are condemning them in the media without trying to ascertain both sides of the story.”
Meanwhile, when asked about the purpose of the meeting, a military official said the intention was to get the message across to the people to condemn the incident but not the Assam Rifles.
This came against the backdrop of various public organizations flaying the skirmish between security forces and NSCN (K) cadres in Meluri sub-division that subsequently claimed innocent lives, caused injury to another civilian and disrupted normalcy in the area.
