Dimapur, April 23 (EMN): Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) has welcomed Justice D Murugesan, Member of National Human Rights Commission, to Kohima in regard to open hearing on various issues relating to atrocities and problems faced by Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes.

NVCO has particularly welcomed the member of National Human Rights Commission as there is no State Human Rights Commission in Nagaland. It claimed that despite repeated directions sent to the State government by the Central government, Apex Court and also High Court directive through PIL, the State government failed to establish State Human Rights Commission.

NVCO president Kezhokhoto Savi, advocate and human right activist, said human right is a symbol of hope and the need of the hour as violation of human rights has become a day to day event in the society.

Stating that the community needs a safe, secured and harmonious environment, he said activities against human rights such as insurgency, child labour, sex exploitation, poverty, physical torture, destruction of property, killing, rape, etc. are also prevailing in Nagaland.

He said insurgency, problems of drugs, alcoholism among youth and adults, child abuse, extortion, anti-Indian mentality, delay in receiving justice and growth of non-humanitarian values, which are dear indication of violation of human rights, have seriously disturbed the peace and tranquillity of the citizens in the State.

He said one of the main problems faced by the citizens of this region is the existence of several insurgent groups and the Central government imposition of the Armed Forces (Special Power) Act, 1958, amended in 1972.
