Nutritional gardening training held for Tuensang Dist. Jail inmates

Dimapur, Feb. 3 (EMN): A training-cum-demonstration on nutritional gardening for livelihood sustainability was conducted for the inmates of District Jail Tuensang on February 1.

A press release from the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Tuensang informed that the programme was conducted by DEF Tuensang in collaboration with KVK Tuensang with an objective “to bring reformation through skill development for the inmates to inculcate the importance of dignity of labour and to solve the problem of unemployment, improve economic status and the nutritional requirement through kitchen gardening”.

Dr. Pritpal Kaur, SDPO, DEF Tuensang, who chaired the training programme, encouraged the inmates “to do away with negativity as it keeps one blind to opportunities and holds hostage to one’s own true potential”.

SP Prison Hamtok Phom pronounced the welcome address and gave a brief remark on the importance of gardening for the inmates, saying that it has helped them in the collection of welfare fund that could be used for helping others.  During the technical session, resource person Dr. Shisarenla Aier, SMS (Horticulture), KVK Tuensang, trained the inmates on growing of vegetable crops in the backyard of residential houses to meet the requirements of family throughout the year.

Aier stressed on the ‘advantages of effective utilisation of land, continuous supply of vegetables throughout the year and reducing expenditure’. She also spoke about site selection, planning, preparation, choosing of garden crops, garden maintenance, manuring, watering, weeding etc.

Farm manager of KVK Tuensang Yanger I Kichu gave a practical demonstration on setting up of nutritional garden to the inmates. Vegetable seeds were also distributed to the inmates during the nutritional gardening training event.

Training on entrepreneurship development

In a separate update, KVK Tuensang has informed that it organised a training-cum-demonstration programme on the topic “Entrepreneurship development through value addition” on February 1.

Senior scientist and head of KVK Tuensang Dr. Keviletsu Khate gave a brief remark on the importance of value-added product, its manufacturing and marketing, while chief guest for the programme SDPO, DEF Tuensang Dr. Pritpal Kaur encouraged the participants to be bold, independent, and creative in the business world and inculcate value creation as strong entrepreneurship characteristics like creativity, risk-taking, goal-setting etc. will help business to succeed, informed an update.

It added that resource person Neha Bharat Markad trained the participants on chocolate candy making, followed by a hands-on demonstration on the packaging, labelling and sealing of products during the technical sessions.

The 19 participants who took part in the programme received a certificate from Agriculture Skill Council of India (ASCI), Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, and a set of garden tools.
