NU PVC suggests three aspects on curriculum design

DIMAPUR — The Pro-Vice Chancellor of Nagaland University (NU), Meriema campus in Kohima, Prof. Dr. GT Thong, suggested three-pronged aspects for inclusion in curriculum design by focusing on involvement of pupils in the learning process and imbibing problem solving skills and enhancing the communication skills.

Dr. Thong made those suggestions at the inaugural programme of a two-week capacity building programme on ‘Curriculum development for higher education teachers’ held at Nagaland University, Kohima campus in Meriema, on October 26 as the chief guest. The programme, which is being organised by NU department of Teacher Education, NU Kohima campus, would culminate on November 6.

Dr. Thong suggested that the curriculum design should be learner centred, traditional subject centred, and problem centred by focusing on the involvement of the pupils in the learning process and imbibing problem solving skills and enhancing the communication skills, an update from NU stated.

It stated that Dr. T Yolila Sangtam, assistant professor of Teacher Education, chaired the programme, while Dr. Jano Legise, dean of School of Humanities and Education, in her welcome address, lauded the initiatives of the department and encouraged the participants to work towards building academic friendship and to step out with a renewed zeal, determination and purpose.

Dr Sushil Kumar Singh, programme director, elaborated on the theme of the programme and explained how the teachers play a vital role in the society and that the teachers need to be enlightened first to guide new generation on the path of perfection.

Dr. Singh stated that the two-week programme would provide appropriate knowledge and skills for curriculum development and enhance the capability of the teachers. He said the participants would also share innovative ideas and challenges experienced around the country. He further stated that the participants would be trained to design the curriculum according to the needs of the present situation.

Dr. Surendra Yadav, programme co-director, has highlighted on the objectives of the workshop.

The inaugural programme concluded with remarks delivered by Dr. Pradipta Kumar Pattnaik, which was followed with a vote of thanks delivered by the head of department, Prof. Dr. Gyanendra Nath Tiwari.
