Dimapur, April 10 (EMN): Peren unit of the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) conducted a seminar on the ill effects of tobacco on adolescents’ health with the students of St. Xavier’s College in Jalukie town on April 7.

The seminar was assisted by the assistant principal of the college, Sr Rency Sabastian; in-charge of the programme, Siba; other teaching faculty; various clubs from the department of education, women cell and Eco club in the college, an update from NTCP Peren stated.

It mentioned that tobacco, as an addictive substance, has made its way to the students, adolescents and peer groups as they are in the most vulnerable stage. It added that due to the addictive nature, they become easy prey. It, therefore, stated that they need to be constantly sensitised and reminded of the alarming health related problems.

Report also stated that tobacco has become the highest cause of preventable deaths in the world according to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, USA.

It further stated that the District Tobacco Control Cell (DTCC), Peren, is trying to reach out to all the school students in the district.

Meanwhile, a college and school level competition on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and blood donation, organised by Peren District AIDS Prevention and Control Unit (DAPCU) has concluded.

The competition was held under the chairmanship of the deputy commissioner of Peren, Sentiwapang Aier, in which a total of six schools and three colleges participated in the competition.

Seyievilie Pfukhri, EAC of Peren, gave away certificates and cash awards to the winners on April 5. He also encouraged the students to participate in different competitions and broaden their knowledge.
