DIMAPUR — Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR) has sought the better nature, good sense and enlightened self-interest of the people to bring an immediate end to the acts of killing and vandalism in Manipur, while it also called upon the community leaders and elected legislators to immediately take action to de-escalate the volatile situation and resume dialogue and negotiations with the stakeholders.

It has mourned the loss of lives and communal fraternity in a region that has been long vitiated by wanton injustice and use of force.

In light of the tragic events unfolding currently, NPMHR stated that the issuing of ‘shoot-on-sight’ orders smacks of the familiar and dangerous high-handedness of a state that has historically proven to be insensitive to the needs and demands of its own citizens.

It added that the unwillingness to listen and negotiate has birthed the very instability and societal fragility that the state is now trying to deal with in ‘fire-fighting’ mode.

CFD condemns violence in Manipur

Christian Forum Dimapur (CFD) has strongly condemned the violence in Manipur and expressed anguish to see innocent people being targeted and persecuted on the basis of their religious and ethnic identity.

“The right to practice one’s religion is a fundamental human right, and it is unacceptable for anyone to be subjected to violence and discrimination because of their faith,” stated a CFD press release issued by its chairman, Rev. Moses Murry, and the secretary, Fr. CP Anto.

It expressed sadness to know that many churches were burned and partially damaged without any provocation.

The forum urged the government of Manipur and government of India to contain the violence immediately. It has expected decisive action to be taken to put an end to the senseless violence and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.

Meanwhile, the forum has expressed solidarity with the Meetei and Kuki communities and called upon all the people of conscience to join in condemning those heinous acts.

It stated that such hatred and intolerance could be overcome only through dialogue, unity and solidarity. It further expressed believe that dialogue and cooperation are essential for building a peaceful and just society and affirmed its commitment to support efforts to promote those values.
