Dimapur, Oct. 26 (EMN): The Nitte University of Mangaluru has conferred honoris causa (honorary doctorate degree) to Latsam Khimun of Arunachal Pradesh and Ramkui Jeme from Assam, in recognition of their unstinted and tireless efforts in the field of social works in the Northeast.

The university regards it as unique achievement and a significant contribution to the society at large, a statement from Raj Bhavan, Kohima said.

Nitte University Chancellor N Vinay Hegde conferred the degree to the two awardees at a function held at the university auditorium on Oct. 26 in Mangaluru. Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya attended the award ceremony as the chief guest.

Acharya, well aware of the valuable works contributed by Khimun and Jeme in the field of social works in the Northeast, had recommended their names for the recognition.

The governor opined that people from all walks of life must be recognised by the universities for their selfless and unique services to the society and the nation. Such conferment, he said will encourage the dedicated and extraordinary individuals and also motivate many others to work towards sustaining cultural heritage, preservation of fragile environment and overall prosperity and empowerment of every section of the society and gender.

“Nitte University was probably the first University in South India to recognise the important work silently done by the social activists outside the academic world, Acharya said.
