DIMAPUR — The Nagaland Gaonburas Federation (NGBF) has lauded Nagaland Director General of Police (DGP) Rupin Sharma for cracking the whip on errant police personnel indulging in alcohol and substance abuse.

The NGBF in a press release called the DGP “not only a reformer but also a strict and disciplined police officer,” as he had taken swift action against the state police personnel found indulging in alcohol and substance abuse and keeping unauthorised arms and ammunition.

“He specifically ensured that the unit commanders physically stock arms and ammunition when they take charge of their units for their own safety. So far seven police personnel have been sacked in Nagaland as part of a crackdown on drug peddling and abuse by adopting a ‘reform or perish’ approach, and encouraging officers with drug or alcohol problems to come forward for treatment,” the federation said.

Of the 43 police personnel facing action, seven have been dismissed, two demoted and compulsorily retired, and 14 issued penalties. The state police have seized drugs worth INR 25 crore between June and August, as reported, the NGBF said.

Affirming that Sharma has changed the lives of many police personnel, the federation said that it is a matter of pride for Nagaland to have him as the head of the police department.

The federation also noted that earlier when Sharma served as DGP (Prisons), his method of “transforming jails from institution of punishment to reform and rehabilitation,” was praiseworthy.

It went on to say that his efforts to integrate inmates with the society post-release and make them productive components of the society when still in the prisons, was “the most noble task.”

The NGBF further expressed gratitude to Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Deputy CM (Home) Y Patton, for supporting the initiatives being carried out by the DGP in the Police department.
