Mokokchung: The government of Nagaland will be drafting a new Nagaland Municipal Act in accordance with the wishes of the Naga people, said Metsubo Jamir, Minister of Rural Development and State Institute of Rural Development on Thursday.

The minister stated this during his thanksgiving programme held at his residence in Sangtemla ward, Mokokchung.

The minister also said every Naga tribe’s demands cannot be incorporated in the new draft, adding that changing an Act is not an easy task.

He said a series of Cabinet meetings were held and it was decided to repeal the Act after the chief minister argued that the new government was formed after the Naga people gave their mandate.

Therefore, people’s voices were honoured by taking a significant risk, he said.

‘Supreme Court directives were made secondary while people’s voice and demands were prioritised,’ he said regarding the repeal of the Act in “toto”.

On clean election campaign, he said rather than merely discussing clean elections during the period of general election, “we should discuss clean Nagaland, where there is no hypocrisy.”

Meanwhile, he said the Ao people will be divided into pieces if they continue to split into independent groups rather than unifying as one.

In this regard, the minister stated that his hope for the Ao people is to come together and move forward.

“We should not look into party lines, clans, or villages, but we should strive towards unifying as one and moving forward,” he said.

Representative from Central NDPP; President of NDPP Mokokchung region; President of BJP Mokokchung district; President of 27 NDPP Mokokchung Town A; President of 27 Mokokchung town NDPP A/C women and youth organisations, representatives from five ward authorities and five units of 27 NDPP Mokokchung Town, Sangtemla ward Authority and Mokokchung Longsa Senso Telongjem also spoke at the event.
