NE sports week: Nagaland win 8 medals in boxing, archery

Imphal, May 2 (EMN): Nagaland boxers secured five medals including two gold and three silver in the final of the women boxing competition in the ongoing North Eastern Council sponsored week-long Northeast regional sports week on Monday.

The two gold medal winner boxers are Archana Thapa (48kg) and Sh Shila (50kg), while the silver medal winners are H Jamuna (57kg), Sanju (63kg) and Monu (75kg). Interestingly, Thapa also secured the best promising boxer’s award during the competition, which was held at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal.

While host Manipur’s women boxers won eleven medals including nine gold and two silvers medals. The gold medallist are Th Apsara (46kg), K Bandana (50kg), N Babyrojisana (54kg), H Ambeshori (57kg), H Giriviya (60kg), Ksh Tilotama (63kg), Ksh Silky (66kg), T Chongloi (70kg) and KM Renu (75kg). The two silver medallists are Y Venika (48kg) and M Rosemary (52kg).

Best boxer title of both men and women categories was secured by Manipur’s Oinam Brandon (70kg) and N Babyrosysana (54kg) respectively.

Mizoram won four silver medals, while Arunachal Pradesh secured two in 46kg (Tagu Aper) and 50kg (Gora Yalung). The silver medal winner boxers of Mizoram are Rathi Lalmingthai (54kg), Nao Chingsanmuanwi (60kg), MC Vankimanawi (66kg) and FC Lalthlamuanpui (70kg).

In the archery competition at Sports Authority of India Centre at Takyelpat, Assam won two gold medals in compound team and compound mixed events, the men’s team secured a silver medal. The gold medal winners of Assam are Anjali Boro, Bornali Bora, Samaina Basumatary (compound team) and Ujjal Kumar Bora, Samaina Basumatary (compound mixed). Assam’s archers who secured silver are Ujjal Kumar Bora, Manab Jyoti Barman, Arbab Jyoti Deka and Hemanta Boro.

Manipur team secured the gold medal in compound team, while the bronze medal was won by Nagaland archers Vehuyi Venuh, Thinuohelie Metha, Ruyonu Theluo and Besuvezo Thisa. The gold medal winning archers of Manipur are H Teuton Khuman, L Yohenba Singh, S Johnson and O Henry.

Nagaland’s archers also secured two more bronze medals in both women (Neikesa Sakhrie, Vetavolu Rhakho and Vetolu Nienu) and mixed (Vehuyi Venuh and Neikesa Sakhrie) compound team competitions.

The Northeast regional sports week has been underway in Imphal since April 28 with around 659 players, coaches and officials from seven Northeast states excluding Meghalaya. The tournament will conclude on May 3.
