Dimapur, March 10 (EMN): Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) welcomed the unanimous decision taken at the consultative meeting on March 9 to conduct Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) election with 33% reservation for women, and lauded the state government, tribal hohos, civil society organisations, churches and NGOs for passing the resolution.

NDPP in a statement on Thursday said that conducting ULB elections would expedite all round development in the urban areas of the state, and help in the uplift of the lives of the people.

“The NDPP has from its inception been a strong advocate and supporter of gender equality and it has been our endeavour to work towards this goal. We look forward that the unanimous passing of the resolution will be a further encouragement for our women to step forward in leading the people and will also be a stepping stone towards having women representatives in the people’s house, the Nagaland Legislative Assembly,” read the statement.

It also supported the resolution on the Indo-Naga issue ‘calling for the negotiating parties to arrive at a political solution that is honourable, inclusive, transparent and acceptable to the people and to work towards one solution and one agreement’.

“The NDPP has always stood for the early resolution of the Indo-Naga issue and have been supporting the positive negotiations between all the negotiating parties,” it said.

NDPP further appealed to the people and state government to work ‘hand in hand in making the resolutions a reality with a vision to make a new Nagaland which the future generations will applaud and appreciate’.

Milestone for Naga women — NSCW

Meanwhile, Chairperson of Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) expressed gratitude for the decision on ULB election.

“This historic move has become a reality owing to the numerous mutual dialogues held among various stakeholders in the state, which is also a clear sign that mutual respect and sincere dialogue can help solve even the most difficult of issues,” Khrienuo Tachü, Chairperson of NSCW  stated, according to a DIPR report.

It said that NSCW expressed gratitude to the state government for initiating the consultative meeting with civil societies, churches, Naga women and the people of Nagaland, ‘in their endeavour to include women in decision-making’. “It is indeed a milestone for Naga women towards inclusive and active participation in decision making processes; which will uplift the status of women definitely,” it stated.
