The Assam Police today searched the official residence of former minister and Congress MLA Siddeque Ahmod, against whom a non-bailable warrant has been issued in an assault case by a court in Karimganj district. The Karimganj police team, which also conducted searches at other locations in the city, could not find Ahmod.
“After the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court issued a non-bailable moving warrant against the MLA regarding an old assault case, our team went to Guwahati last night.
“Since this morning, the team has conducted searches at his MLA Hostel residence and many other places. However, we have not been able to find him yet,” Karimganj Superintendent of Police B P Rabha told PTI.
The case was registered in 2011 and the trial was currently going on at the Court, he said.
“The original charge sheet of the case did not contain the name of Ahmod and the complainant objected to this. Then the Court issued summons to the MLA for appearing in case, but he did not come,” Rabha said.
He said before this non-bailable warrant, the Court had issued another non-bailable warrant, for which Ahmod got temporary relief from the Gauhati High Court, and later was admitted in a hospital after his recent accident.
Asked if Ahmod was absconding, Rabha said “That I can’t say. If necessary, the Court will declare it. We usually declare a person absconding only after searching for a long time and do not find the person.”
When contacted, Assam Assembly Principal Secretary Gauranga Prasad Das said a police team from Karimganj came this morning seeking permission to search Ahmod’s quarters at the MLA Hostel.
“The Speaker has given the permission accordingly,” he added.
