National Handloom Expo underway in Kohima

Kohima, March 22 (EMN): The National Handloom Expo is underway in Kohima.

The handloom showcase was inaugurated on Wednesday by Hushili Sema, commissioner and Secretary for Industry & Commerce at the Gurkha Panchayat public ground at Chandmari colony in the capital town.

The event has been organized by the Nagaland Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd., of Dimapur. The event was sponsored by the establishment of the Development Commissioner (Handloom), of the ministry of Textiles.

According to the organizers, 60 stalls have been set up. Sex states namely Assam, Manipur, Nagaland Dehradun, Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh are taking part in the event.

Speaking to this correspondent, Commissioner and Secretary for Industry & Commerce, Hushili Sema, said that the event was platform to empower women in the rural areas.

Also, ST Subramanian, Dimapur deputy director-in-charge of Weaver’s service centre, said that the objective of the event was to promote handloom all over India throughout the year in order to enhance the livelihood of the handloom weavers.

Also, Subramanian pointed out that the weavers in Nagaland lack marketing avenues for their products. That was why the government was organising such event in order to help handloom weavers, he said. Further, he said that the event was also a promotional activity. The stalls have been provided for free with lump-sum daily allowances for each stall. It is also the first national handloom expo in Kohima, he notes.

The 14-day event will go until April 4.
